Welcome to Cat-Tales

My and my cats

I have loved and been fascinated by cats for as long as I can remember, so when I found myself in a position to be owned by a cat or two I was delighted.  Since then I have had the pleasure of sharing my lives with eight cats, and this website is mostly their stories.  I hope you enjoy it!

Geroge, Billy and ErrolMuch is now written on various lists and newsgroups about how some people believe all cats should be indoor cats, and much of what is written is very bad-tempered.  There are a variety of reasons but the main ones are that it's safer for the cats, and protects wildlife.  My cats, however, all go out to some degree.  I acknowledge that they will meet hazards they would not otherwise do, and that they can and do catch rodents and sometimes birds, especially when we are on holiday in Scotland.  However as a true cat slave I see it as my duty to provide them with the best life they can have, which may not be the safest life.  I certainly do not see myself as their jailer.  They all derive a great deal of pleasure from going out - Rufus goes out most and insists on going out all night, nearly every night, unless the weather is very poor.  The others are content to stay in at night (George spends the odd night out) but to spend varying amounts of time out during the day.  If I am working at home and it's a warm enough the front door is open and they wander in and out as they see fit.  Bill and Errol especially have fans and friends amongst the regular passers-by, and they all get plenty of excesie climbing fences and trees, though their favourite trees were a row of conifers which the new owner of that house has thankfully cut down - they were blocking a lot of light from my house in winter.  I should add that although I live in an urban area that there is very little traffic, so little that the local kids play out just about every day of the year.  If I lived near a busy road I would have to provide them with a run so they could go out safe from the traffic - sadly cats don't have the best roadsense going.

Errol with some of his fansI have taken all the photos on this site apart from those of Errol on the purple background, which were taken by Alan Robinson.
